I would like to share my recent experience with this dental practice. I was charged for a dental cleaning that should have been fully covered by my insurance. The issue arose when the practice rescheduled my original annual cleaning appointment due to a staffing issue on their end. Unfortunately, my appointment was moved to a date just two days before my scheduled six-month check-up, and I was subsequently charged for the cleaning.

Despite my request for the charge to be reversed, the office has not acknowledged any responsibility for the scheduling change and has refused to address the issue. I’ve experienced multiple instances in the past where appointments have been rescheduled due to staffing shortages, and I am disappointed that this practice has not taken accountability for their own scheduling challenges.

Given this lack of professionalism in handling appointments and billing, I would advise potential patients to consider other options for dental care. I will not be returning to this practice.

Dr. Cane is a great dentist. She is caring, compassionate and has a terrific "bedside manner. " She is also one of the most knowledgeable doctors I have ever met. The office support staff and technicians made me feel at ease. They gave me a breakdown of all fees and answered all of my questions. I would wholeheartedly recommend The Johnson Family Dental office in San Luis Obispo.

The level of service is outstanding from the techs, the teeth cleaning gal, and, of course, the Dentist. They all go beyond what you get with many dental practices..thank you all

Dr. Susan Cane and her staff are an absolutely top professional dental office! It was only because another local office stopped my major treatment midway, that I found JFD, and it has been the best possible outcome! She is extremely knowledgeable, caring, holistic, and the staff is as well! Just the best vibe for not always fun dental stuff!

Friendly neighborhood dentist. I’ve been a patient for about 2 years. Everyone is always kind, compassionate and respectful in my opinion. As someone who has fear and trauma associated with dentistry, I appreciate the people at JFD who are understanding and willing to help me understand everything about my care. It seems to me that some of the negative reviews here are a bit exaggerated. I know it can be difficult to process bad news, and I know it can be hard to have patience when dealing with medical issues, but it is a busy office and people have to wait their turn. I would absolutely recommend this dentist. In fact, Dr Cane repaired work that a less competent dentist had done on me. She was not disparaging of that dentist or me in anyway. She helped me understand what had happened and then she fixed the problem.

The dentist lied to me about what was causing my tooth pain. She said I needed an $800 night guard or else I'd be in pain. It was not true they try to up sell them to everyone. Beware the dentist is more concerned about ripping you off than treating you. Dental hygienist is great though.

Somehow I spent almost 2 hours here for just one annual exam. Most of this time was spent waiting for the dentist. I’ll also add that I waited 3 months for this visit. All of this waiting ended up being for just 10 minutes with the dentist, Susan Cane, where she ranted about a mouth guard and tongue issues. She asked if I had trouble sleeping, biting into sandwiches and jaw pain; all of which I said no to. She somehow found 3 cavities, but hardly looked at my teeth. She didn’t even look at my gums like most dentists do. It seems like Susan does not want to be a dentist anymore and would prefer to be purely be a saleswoman.
To be clear, the 1 star review is specifically for Susan Cane. The front desk and hygienist were great (although they kept cancelling and rescheduling my appointments at the very last minute). I would not recommend this dentist’s office.

This review is specifically for Dr. Susan Cane. She uses the fact that she is a "holistic dentist" as an excuse to say whatever she believes to your face, and continues to talk at you for so long and tirelessly about what she thinks is correct that you're unable to get a word in to contradict her or give her more information about your situation. She passes personal judgement about aspects of your situation, truly applicable to dental health or not, and will say it directly to your face. I was anxious coming into my appointment since I had not seen a dentist in several years, and I can say with certainty that whatever I thought would take place in my appointment, it ended up being so much worse purely due to what Dr. Cane said to me and how she conducted herself during the appointment. Incredibly unprofessional and rude, giving unsolicited advice (demands) about all aspects of a person's life outside of dentistry. I am massively disappointed and hurt after leaving the office today. No professional should be allowed to speak to a client, or anyone, the way that she does. The hygienist and front desk staff were great.
