My dental insurance plan has an annual maximum coverage of $2000. I have never exceeded this limit in previous years, so I was shocked to see a $266 statement in my inbox for a routine cleaning that took place Dec 2024.

Apparently Downtown Dental had billed $1,635 to my insurance earlier in 2024 for a cleaning and 2-3 fillings (that’s a whole other issue on how that would get me to $1,635 already). In Nov 2024, I had gotten my wisdom teeth extracted at another clinic, and spent the remaining $365 of my insurance coverage, maxing me out for the year. I had to pay the remainder out of pocket, but did so with no qualms, as I fully understand the terms of my coverage, and it was my oversight for underestimating the prior charges for my cleaning and fillings. However, Downtown Dental was not aware of this procedure, and thought I still had $365 of remaining coverage for the year. (As an aside, I did mention my wisdom teeth surgery to my dentist at Downtown Dental, but the receptionist explained with scorn that they did not know my insurance was billed for this procedure, but that seems quite obvious to me.)

At this point, I took a closer look at the itemized invoice, copied below. My visit that day cost $630. As a “courtesy” they slapped on a seemingly arbitrary $324 discount, as I had maxed out my coverage. Clearly, even if I had $365 remaining on my coverage, the cost of this visit would exceed that amount, and I would have to pay out of pocket. At this point, the receptionist assured me it is not the clinic’s intention to overcharge its patients; they are dedicated to providing the best possible service to retain customers.

They certainly will not be retaining me as a customer, as the charges below suggest Downtown Dental is primarily concerned with maximizing profits, whether at the cost of insurance companies or its patients. Based on Humana, the average dental cleaning without insurance costs between $75 - $200. Even considering the discount I received, $266 exceeds this average, and I had already paid an additional $40 for fluoride treatment (not sure if there was a typo, but that amount was paid in cash, as they also charge an additional credit card fee). Furthermore, I have never taken so many dental X-rays, or been diagnosed with so many cavities before visiting this clinic. Based on my experience here, I fully believe Downtown Dental overcharges its patients, and the receptionists are incredibly condescending.

Doctor Kimon is such a pleasant informative Dentist. Over the past six years he has stayed consistent with his professionalism and overall care. The staff is also knowledgeable and efficient. It’s feels like I’ve gone to the spa for my teeth. If you’re looking for a new dentist you don’t need to look any further Doctor Kimon is the one 10/10.

Hands down the absolute best dentist I have ever visited. Dr. Karina is so gentle, kind and sweet. Dr. Karina is the only dentist I will ever be visiting moving forward. I want to say thank you to Eloise as well who helped answer all my questions prior to my appointments and helped schedule all my appointments. Clean office, friendly staff and family treatment. Thank you Dr. Karina and staff, because of all of you I no longer fear sitting in a dentist chair.

I recently visited Downtown Dental Studio and had a mixed experience. On one hand, Dr. Kimon is absolutely amazing! He is incredibly skilled and takes the time to explain everything thoroughly. His friendly demeanor and professionalism immediately put me at ease, making the dental procedures feel much less intimidating. I can genuinely say that he is one of the best doctors I've encountered in healthcare.

However, my experience with the staff was quite disappointing. While Dr. Kimon's care was exceptional, the professionalism of the front office staff left much to be desired. I was taken aback by how they handled the payment process when I arrived for my appointment. While in the chair with one side numb, waiting for a temporary crown, I was informed that I needed to pay $350 for a temporary crown, which would be discarded later.

Furthermore, the receptionist's demeanor was not what I expected in a professional setting. Her responses seemed dismissive and lacked the warmth one would hope to receive at a healthcare facility. When I asked her how it was possible that they were charging me that amount and what would happen with the temporary crown later on, she replied, “Some people usually eat or swallow it.” I got up and left flabbergasted by the interaction, especially considering Dr. Kimon's work ethic.

Unfortunately, I will find a different dental office.

Doctor Kimon, Eloise, Galina and the entire team at Downtown Dental are always so nice and make you feel very comfortable. I have been coming here for 20 years and continue to even though I have moved to Astoria. Well worth the commute from anywhere for such kind and professional treatment. Highly Recommend!

Yesterday I had an other pleasant experience as always at downtown dental. Dr. Kimon is always great, so knowledgeable, calm and has great manual dexterity; he explained the procedure he was above to do thoroughly. His great technique and precision were reassuring.
Their entire staff is very professional and always courteous.
