I had my second cleaning here with Anna, hygienist, and she did an incredible job and was super kind. I have anxiety around the dentist and she made me feel very at ease. My teeth feel super clean! Dr. Lieberman was super nice and knowledgeable as well! Highly recommend this office.

Overall the visit was fine. The actual visit was short and the hygienist was nice. My only issue was that our appt was for noon and we didn’t get seen until 12:30. That was a long wait for a kid.

I had broken a tooth last week. Over the weekend I wrote a text to Essex Family Dental. They kindly brought me in ASAP the following Monday. Dr. Lieberman and Dr. Makay are very thorough and detail oriented in their care of patients like me. I highly recommend this practice to friends and family.

Essex Family Dental is a great practice—if your child is neurotypical. However, if your child has autism, I strongly advise looking elsewhere. After two years of being patients here, our recent appointment was absolutely awful and humiliating.

From the beginning, it was clear the hygienist wasn’t listening. I explained multiple times that my 6-year-old daughter has autism, yet she kept writing in the chart that my daughter had arthritis. It was a 6:30 PM appointment, and my daughter was already overstimulated, but instead of adjusting their approach, they insisted on forcing her to wear the x-ray vest, which only escalated the situation.

I tried to help her regulate by giving her my phone, which made the cleaning somewhat tolerable. But then Dr. Lieberman came in, took the phone out of her hands, quickly looked in her mouth, found a cavity, and immediately decided to refer us to another dentist, stating they couldn’t handle her care until she’s 12. The referral outright said this was for “behavior management.”

The entire experience was deeply upsetting and dismissive of my daughter’s needs. During our last appointment, I had already informed them about her autism diagnosis, and after a billing issue, I was assured a dentist would call me to discuss accommodations—yet that never happened.

Essex Family Dental clearly isn’t equipped or willing to accommodate neurodivergent children. If you have a child with autism, don’t waste your time here. You deserve a provider who will listen, adapt, and treat your child with respect.

The dentists and reception staff have ALWAYS been very friendly and professional the 25 years I have used the services at EFD, including my visit yesterday. The hygienist I have seen the last three visits (Anna) has been the most professional and friendly, earning my highest recommendation.
