A year ago, my company changed our dental insurance. I had been a loyal patient at New Image Dental for years, but after some trial and error, I eventually found LA Smiles. My first appointment there went great—the staff was polite and knowledgeable.

When I needed a root canal, LA Smiles referred me to Root Vision. After the procedure, I scheduled an appointment with LA Smiles for the crown replacement. Today, February 27, was the day of my appointment. However, I had it marked in my phone for noon. At 8:36 AM, I received a call reminding me that my appointment was actually at 9:00 AM.

I rushed to LA Smiles and checked in. At the front desk, the receptionist gave me two payment options for the crown replacement. Unfortunately, neither worked for me at the time, and I was hoping to work out a payment plan instead. That was on me, as I should have planned better.

The receptionist informed me that she’d have to cancel my appointment, but there would be a $100 cancellation fee due to the time slot being reserved for the crown procedure. While I understand the policy, this fee was never communicated to me in advance. Additionally, I was under the impression my appointment was at noon, not 9:00 AM.

The receptionist also explained that I couldn’t schedule any future appointments until I paid the $100 cancellation fee. Again, I understand this policy, but clear communication is essential. A reminder call or confirmation yesterday would have clarified the time and allowed me to ask questions about the payment process. At that point, I could have rescheduled without incurring the cancellation fee or arriving unprepared to pay the full cost of the crown replacement.

As a patient and consumer, I rely on clear communication from the service provider to make informed decisions. While I have no ill will toward LA Smiles, I’ve decided to find a new dental office.

When dealing with scammers you'll notice that they use complex, confusing jargon to sound more credible. They'll give you this list of urgent problems that's wrong and tell you that it needs immediate attention. Then they'll pressure you for money on the spot and if you don't you'll face awful consequences. Unfortunately, this is exactly how I felt during my visit here.

In my experience with other dentists, they didn't use scientific terms that was hard to follow just to make themselves sound more authentic. Here, they pressured me for money and made me feel overwhelmed and even tried to get me and my partner to sign up for a credit card right there in the office to cover the costs. My partner and I were under the same dental plan as well but they completely ignored that and pressured him to pay full price instead of the co-pay.

While everyone there was extremely nice and polite, the entire time my intuition was telling me it was a scam. An ethical dentist would have clear communication with their patients and they wouldn't use high pressure sales tactics to make you feel anxious or coerce you into paying.

Don't let anyone pressure you to do anything you aren't comfortable with doing. Get a second opinion and find a dentist who prioritizes your care over your wallet.

My experience at LA Smiles Dentistry has been great! I love how transparent they are with billing and that they always ask for permission before proceeding. Not all dental offices are that kind and professional. But this one is!
