I recently went for my regular dental cleaning, which I attend twice a year. I've been going to the same practice, though I've switched locations over the past 14+ years. I'm familiar with my insurance coverage and only pay extra for the fluoride treatment. During my last visit in May 2024, I mentioned that my gums were irritated, and the hygienist suggested an additional gum treatment, which I agreed to. At the dental office, they now require patients to sign off on the estimated cost of services not covered by insurance. The hygienist gave me an electronic pad to sign and explained what I was signing, but the computer screen was behind me, so I trusted what she said. I agreed to pay for the fluoride and gum treatment, totaling $103, which I paid after my appointment.
However, about a month later, I received a bill for an oral cancer screening that I never agreed to because I know my insurance doesn't cover it. I tried calling the office multiple times, but the location I visited had abruptly closed. My calls were routed to a call center, which repeatedly told me I needed to speak with the now-closed office about billing questions. For months, I couldn't resolve the issue but continued to receive bills for a service I neither agreed to nor received. I only had a cleaning, fluoride treatment, and gum treatment during my visit. The other office insists I agreed to the charge, but the original hygienist is no longer there, and the service didn't even occur at their location. The other dentist office can not prove I received an Oral Cancer review and is only going off the e-forms that were signed. I know this was an error on the other dental office for adding a service that I never received and the only services I received that day was a cleaning, fluoride and gum treatment. Also, out of 14 years attending the office, my patient history shows I have never paid and I am 100% certain I never received this service even though the Wilmot office states I am responsible because I signed an e-form acknowledging which by no means verifies I received that service.
